Floral Free as a Bird Friendship Card
May 10, 2020 /I’m part of a monthly swap group, and I absolutely love designing new cards each month and receiving others’ designs. In May, we wanted to make sure to use Stampin’ Up! items that would be available once the new catalog goes live on June 3 so that our designs could be replicated. I hadn’t received my pre-order of new catalog items yet, so I went back to my carryover stamp sets and was drawn to the floral images in the Free As a Bird set. I added in some Stampin’ Blends, ribbon, and plenty of Pearl Basic Jewels to finish off this design!
Card Tutorial
Stamp with Tuxedo Black Memento Ink
1. Randomly stamp floral and leaf images from Free As a Bird stamp set on Whisper White cardstock measuring 5 1/2" x 3".
2. Stamp "Your friendship means the world to me" on 1 1/2" strip of Whisper White cardstock.
3. Stamp "Thanks for being you" and floral image on Whisper White cardstock measuring 5 1/4" x 4". This will be the inner panel of the card. OPTIONAL: Stamp flowers on envelope.
Color
4. Use Stampin’ Blends to color the stamped images on the 5 1/2″ x 3 ” cardstock and 5 1/4″ x 4″ card insert (and envelope, if you chose to stamp it). I used the Dark Petal Pink, Light and Dark Mossy Meadow, and Light and Dark Rich Razzleberry. I think Blackberry Bliss in place of the Rich Razzleberry would also look great!
Coloring Tips: for the large flowers, I started with the dark color in the center, then used the light Stampin’ Blend to color to the edges. I prefer dark first, then light for blending. For the leaves, I colored the whole leaves using the light shade, then went back with the finer, bullet-tip dark color to add some lines along the leaf veins.
Tip for coloring on envelope: the Stampin’ Blends bleed through easily. When coloring the envelope, I slid a piece of scrap cardstock inside just in case it bled through the first layer of envelope.
Punch
5. Use the Label Me Fancy punch to punch out the stamped greeting (on 1 1/2″ Whisper White strip) and a Petal Pink punch.
6. Using a Paper Snips, cut the Petal Pink punched cardstock in half vertically.Use the adhesive of your choice to adhere these halves to the left and right of the punched greeting.
Assemble
7. Use a Bone Folder to fold a Petal Pink card base (11″ x 4 1/4″, scored at 5 1/2″) in half.
8. Adhere stamped panel to inside of card.
9. Adhere Blackberry Bliss cardstock measuring 5 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ to the center of the card front. Use Paper Snips to trip any excess.
10. Adhere stamped Whisper White panel to the Blackberry Bliss, again trimming any excess.
11. Use Mini Glue Dots to attach 3-4″ of Petal Pink 5/8″ Organdy Striped Ribbon to the back of the punched tag. Trim the ribbon ends at a diagonal.
12. Use Stampin’ Dimensionals to attach the punched greeting and ribbon to the card front. I centered it from left to right but placed it higher up on the card.
13. Add Pearl Basic Jewels to the flower centers to finish off the card.
I hope you enjoyed this card design! I’ve linked all the supplies I used below, and you can order them by clicking the supply images or selecting “Place a Stampin’ Up! Order” along the top of the screen.

Sailing Home Sampler
April 26, 2020 /About a year ago, as I was wrapping up my dissertation to complete my Ph.D., I was brainstorming gift ideas for my advisor. In addition to supporting me academically in so many ways throughout grad school, she and I traveled the world together presenting our STEM education research and working with teachers. In less than four years, we traveled together to Australia, Japan (several times), South Korea, Taiwan, Italy, Finland, and numerous cities within the U.S. What kind of gift do you give someone who has played such a significant role in your life? A hand-made gift, of course! I love the nautical theme of Stampin’ Up’s Come Sail Away suite, and the Memories & More card that says, “What is life but a grand adventure” was the perfect sentiment. I designed this 12×12 sampler, then framed and gifted it to my advisor.
Although the stamps and dies will be carrying over into the 2020-2021 catalog, the Designer Series Paper I used for this sampler is now listed as a Last-Chance product. This means it’s only available until June 2 or while supplies last! In addition, some of the other items (Come Sail Away Memories & More Cards, Sail Away Trinkets, Metallic Brads, Baker’s Twine, and Magnolia Lane Ribbon) are retiring and on the clearance rack, so now is a great time to buy them at a discount if you’re interested in completing this project!
Sampler Tutorial
1. Cut Cardstock, Designer Series Paper, and Memories & More Cards
There are three sets of layering sizes that make up this sampler. Each basic card element is composed of three layers: Night of Navy cardstock as the largest, Sahara Sand cardstock as the middle, and either Come Sail Away Designer Series Paper or a Memories & More card for the smallest. Cut these elements first.
Central Piece – What is Life but a Grant Adventure (cut one of each size)
- Night of Navy: 6 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
- Sahara Sand: 6 1/4″ x 4 1/4″
- Memories & More Card: 6″ x 4″
Side Pieces to Left and Right of Center (cut two of each size)
- Night of Navy: 4 1/2″ x 2″
- Sahara Sand: 4 1/4″ x 1 3/4″
- Designer Series Paper: 4″ x 1 1/2″
Pieces Lining Top and Bottom (cut six of each size)
- Night of Navy: 3 1/2″ x 3 1/8″
- Sahara Sand: 3 1/4″ x 2 7/8″
- Designer Series Paper/Memories & More Card: 3″ x 2 5/8″
2. Stamp Images
Use Night of Navy ink to stamp a lighthouse and the larger sailboat on Whisper White cardstock.
Use Soft Suede ink to stamp the smaller sailboat, a compass, and an anchor on Whisper White cardstock.
3. Die Cut Stamped Images and Additional Shapes
Use the Smooth Sailing Dies to cut the stamped anchor, sailboats, and lighthouse. In addition, cut:
- Soft Suede rope
- Soft Suede ship’s wheel
- Soft Suede compass needle (small)
- Sahara Sand compass needle (large)
- Night of Navy seaweed
- Balmy Blue seaweed
Use the Layering Circles Dies to cut the compass and two Night of Navy circles.
4. Assemble Each Component
Use the close-up images below to assemble the components. Make sure to pay attention to where the ribbon/twine is placed, often just around the first layer.
I used a variety of Tear & Tape, Snail adhesive, Glue Dots, and Multipurpose Liquid Glue. If you are planning to frame this in a frame with glass, I do not recommend using Stampin’ Dimensionals, as they will just get flattened in the frame.
5. Adhere Components to 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper (DSP)
I would recommend first placing the 12×12 DSP in your frame and marking the DSP with a pencil at the edge of the frame so you know how much of it will be showing. Next, place the central component, using a ruler to ensure that it is perfectly centered from top to bottom and left to right. I used Tear & Tape adhesive for securing these components because I wanted it to be very strong.
Add the two side pieces to the left and right of the central component. Make sure to align them with the central component at the top and bottom, and center them between the central component and where you marked the edge of the frame.
Finally, add the six additional components on the top and bottom. I recommend starting with the one in the middle, making sure it is perfectly centered to the left and right of the 12×12 DSP and centered between the top of the central component and where you marked the edge of the frame. Once the middle piece is in place, the two side components are easy – just make sure to line them up along the top with the piece you just placed and to the side of the already placed pieces.

Parisian Thank You
April 25, 2020 /I was immediately drawn to the Parisian Blossoms suite of Stampin’ Up! products. The champagne foil elements on the Parisian Blossoms Specialty Designer Series Paper, the gorgeous dies, a great color combination… what’s not to love! I tried to resist purchasing the set, but after five of my planned trips (Portland, San Francisco, Arizona, Vancouver, and Montreal) were cancelled due to COVID-19, I decided a little travel nostalgia was in order.
My now-husband and I visited Paris together in 2010, when we had only been dating for about four months. Looking back, I can’t believe we dove into traveling together in such a big way, but our separate European study abroad trips happened to align, with his concluding and mine having a long break at the same exact time. We independently traveled to Paris, met up in the airport, and proceeded to explore the city together. Being college students, we did everything “on the cheap,” but it was still an amazing trip. The Eiffel Tower is stunning, and we definitely want to visit again some day!
The stamps, dies, and Designer Series Paper I use for this card are now listed as Last-Chance products. This means they’re only available until June 2 or while supplies last!
Card Tutorial
Prep Card Base
1. Cut 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" Petal Pink cardstock. Score at 4 1/4".
2. Using the Paper Trimmer, cut a 1" chunk out from the top and bottom of the card front. Make sure to cut only to the score line, as shown.
Die Cutting
3. Die cut an Eiffel Tower out of Basic Black cardstock measuring approximately 5″ x 3″.
4. Die cut “merci” out of Basic Black cardstock measuring approximately 2 3/4″ x 5/8″. Make sure to save the small circle for the “i”!
5. Die cut the flourish out of Pool Party cardstock measuring 2 3/4″ x 1 3/4″.
Stamping
6. Use Petal Pink ink to stamp the flourish at the top of Whisper White cardstock measuring 4″ x 3 1/4″.
Assembly
7. Use a bone folder to fold the Petal Pink card base in half.
8. With card closed, use Snail adhesive to adhere two pieces of Parisian Blossoms Specialty DSP measuring 4″ x 7/8″ to the top and bottom. NOTE: Use the top and bottom of the card front to guide your placement. There should be NO space between the top/bottom of the card front and the DSP.
9. Use Snail adhesive to adhere a piece of Parisian Blossoms Specialty DSP measuring 4″ x 3 1/4″ to card front.
10. Use Multipurpose Liquid Glue to adhere die cut Eiffel Tower to card front. NOTE: Make sure you don’t apply glue to the top or bottom portions of the Eiffel Tower, where it will hang off the card front.
11. Use the Detailed Trio punch to round the corners of a piece of Pool Party cardstock measuring 2 3/4″ x 5/8″.
12. Use Multipurpose Liquid Glue to adhere “merci” to the Pool Party cardstock.
13. Use Stampin’ Dimensionals to secure the die cut flourish to the back of the “merci” and Pool Party assembly. Add additional Dimensionals, and secure this whole assembly to the card front.
I hope you enjoyed this card design! I’ve linked all the supplies I used below, and you can order them by clicking the supply images or selecting “Place a Stampin’ Up! Order” along the top of the screen.

Birthday Bonanza Buckle Fold
March 16, 2020 /I’ve been spending a lot of time creating with the Birthday Bonanza suite of Stampin’ Up! products. I love the whimsical animals, and especially with the stress and anxiety of coronavirus/COVID-19 right now, I’ll take any excuse for bright colors and cheer! I have three Birthday Bonanza card designs that will be part of the April 2020 class by mail (sign up by April 5, 2020, if you’d like to participate!), and the card I’m featuring in this post was my swap for the month of March.
This card features a fun buckle fold design. I’ll outline the general steps I took to make the card below, but please leave a comment if you have any questions!
Card Tutorial
Stamping
Note: I always like to start with my stamping first. I like to make sure I allow the ink plenty of time to dry, and just in case I mess up, this allows me to flip the cardstock over and get a free second chance!
1. Use Coastal Cabana ink to stamp the pom pom image randomly on a piece of Whisper White cardstock measuring 5 1/4″ x 4″.
2. Use Bermuda Bay ink to stamp “Let’s celebrate you!” on a piece of Whisper White cardstock that measures 3 3/8″ x 1 3/4″.
Die Cutting
3. Die cut a Bermuda Bay scalloped circle (approximately 2 1/4″ in diameter) using the Layering Circles Dies.
4. Die cut a Whisper White stitched circle (approximately 1 7/8″ in diameter) using the Stitched Shapes Dies.
Creating the Buckle Fold
5. Adhere a piece of Birthday Bonanza Designer Series Paper measuring 4″ x 2 3/4″ to a Bermuda Bay card base that measures 8 1/2″ x 4 1/4″, scored at 5 1/2″. The DSP will fit with an equal border on all sides on the smaller side of the scored card base.
6. Slide the card base/DSP layer into the Classic Label Punch. Insert the paper all the way, so the cardstock touches the back of the punch, center on the left and right sides, and punch.
7. Use a Bone Folder to crease the Bermuda Bay card base along the score line.
8. Adhere the Whisper White cardstock stamped with the pom pom to the inside of the card base.
9. Use a bone folder to crease a piece of Coastal Cabana cardstock that measures 7 1/4″ x 2″, scored at 3 5/8″.
10. Apply Snail adhesive to the back of this folded piece of cardstock, making sure it opens the opposite way a card would normally open.
11. With the Bermuda Bay card base closed, slip the top half of the folded Coastal Cabana cardstock in the punched slot. Keeping the edge of the Coastal Cabana cardstock inside the slot, position the bottom half (with adhesive) on the inside of the card base so it is straight and apply pressure to adhere.
12. Adhere the “Let’s celebrate you!” Whisper White cardstock inside the Coastal Cabana folded piece.
Finishing Touches on Card Front
13. Use Snail adhesive to attach the Whisper White stitched circle to the Bermuda Bay scalloped circle. Adhere this assembly to the front of the Coastal Cabana buckle.
14. Fussy-cut a koala image from the Birthday Bonanza DSP and adhere to the Whisper White stitched circle using Snail adhesive.
I hope you enjoyed this card design! You could use many different color combinations and animals from the DSP to switch it up and have more fun designs. I’ve linked all the supplies I used below, and you can order them by clicking the supply images or selecting “Place a Stampin’ Up! Order” along the top of the screen.

Wedding Card Design
February 9, 2020 /I'm part of a swap group that creates and swaps new Stampin' Up! card designs each month. I love this group for getting new ideas and pushing my own creativity. Today I'm sharing my February 2020 swap design, featuring the Happy Birthday To You Sale-A-Bration stamp set. I love the images in this stamp set, and the fact that I earned it for free with a $50 purchase was the icing on the cake! (See what I did there?! Pun definitely intended!)
I immediately thought of a wedding cake when I saw the cake image, so I decided to use greetings from the Flourishing Phrases stamp set to pull the card together. I'll outline the general steps I took to make the card below, but please leave a comment if you have any questions!
Card Tutorial
Stamping
Note: I always like to start with my stamping first. I like to make sure I allow the ink plenty of time to dry, and just in case I mess up, this enables me to flip the cardstock over and get a free second chance!
1. Use Memento Tuxedo Black Ink to stamp the cake image on a piece of Thick Whisper White cardstock measuring 3 1/2″ x 2 3/4″.
2. Still using Memento ink, stamp “Marriage is a Journey” on a 2″ x 1 1/2″ piece of Petal Pink cardstock.
3. Finally, use Memento ink to stamp a greeting of choice for the inside of the card. I used a piece of 5 1/4″ x 4″ Whisper White cardstock to make sure it would be easy to write in the card, and I used the greeting “GOOD THING YOU GET TO BRING YOUR BEST FRIEND ALONG” from the Flourishing Phrases stamp set… I love how that pairs with the outer greeting!
4. Use the Country Floral 3D Embossing Folder to emboss a Whisper White piece of cardstock cut to 5 1/4″ x 4″.
5. With a Sponge Dauber dipped in Petal Pink ink, use a light circular motion to add ink to flowers on the embossed cardstock. Start with a small amount of ink and add on to reach the desired color intensity. This is meant to look random and imperfect, so don’t worry about even or accurate coverage!
6. Use Stampin’ Blends to add color to the stamped cake image. I used Dark and Light Petal Pink for the cake stand and flowers, with Light Daffodil Delight for accents. Old Olive (both light and dark) finished out the coloring of the leaves. (See final image on the bottom of the page for more detail.)
Die Cutting
7. Die cut the colored cake image using the Birthday Dies.
8. Cut an additional cake shape on Petal Pink cardstock measuring 3 1/2″ x 2 3/4″.
9. Die cut the “Marriage is a Journey” greeting using the Stitched Rectangle Dies.
Assembly
10. Fold a Petal Pink card base measuring 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ in half along the center score line at 4 1/4″.
11. Use SNAIL Adhesive to attach embossed Whisper White to card front and inner greeting to inside.
12. Cut Petal Pink Cake in half vertically. Adhere to the sides of the stamped cake image using SNAIL.
13. Use Stampin’ Dimensionals and Mini Dimensionals to adhere greeting and mounted cake to card front.
14. Add Champagne Rhinestone Basic Jewels for a final embellishment!
I hope you enjoyed this swap design. I had such a fun time designing it and can’t wait to share it with some newlyweds this spring! I’ve linked all the supplies I used below, and you can order them by clicking the supply images or selecting “Place a Stampin’ Up! Order” along the top of the screen.
